Past years

Who We Are

Courtyard Shakespeare emerged from a passion for mentoring young artists and celebrating Shakespeare's timeless works. In summer 2018, Dan C. Schmidt, a Kansas high school drama teacher, envisioned a space for local theatre students to collaborate with seasoned professionals, especially alumni from Kansas City. His mission was to inspire creativity and clarity in Shakespearean productions while nurturing the next generation of theater artists.

After Dan’s passing and the 2020 industry shutdown, his former students and colleagues revived his vision by producing A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the courtyard where it all began, honoring his legacy.

Today, Courtyard Shakespeare is preparing for its sixth production since Dan's death, upholding his values of beautiful storytelling, joyful collaboration, and respect for Shakespeare's enduring work.
